THEY are messages just about every man has heard by now but, when they’re coming from someone like Angry Anderson, they tend to have more resonance.
Staff at Orange City Council’s Works Depot heard a few life lessons from the hard-living rock star.
Angry told the mainly male group about the dangers of hearing loss, prostate cancer and depression in a manner that connected with his audience.
Stories about his life as an apprentice fitter in his teen years, his marriage troubles, depression and the loss of a very close friend to prostate cancer seemed to hit a nerve with many in the audience.
“I was married for near 30 years myself and he’s made a lot of sense to me today,” Peter Richards said.
“What he’s said has really spoken to me ... he’s helped me out this afternoon.”
The messages were clear.
Look after yourself, look after your health and look after your mates.
With constant reference to his own industrial deafness, brought on by years on work sites and in front of amplifier stacks, Angry did what he could to push home the message about hearing safety but couldn’t help getting in a couple of messages about the need to get prostate checks and how to handle depression.
With the rock star’s heyday now behind him, spreading such messages fills a great deal of his time.
He says the message is definitely getting across.
“If I didn’t believe that I wouldn’t be here doing it,” he said.
