INDEPENDENT candidate for Indi Alan Lappin scored his first win of the campaign yesterday by drawing top spot on the ballot paper.
Six candidates were confirmed for the electorate following the close of nominations on Thursday.
Places on the ballot paper were drawn yesterday, with Mr Lappin, 58, thrilled to take out first place.
“I feel very lucky about that,” the Boorhaman farmer said.
“With a bit of luck I might pick up a few additional votes — I’ll need every vote I can get.”
Incumbent Liberal member Sophie Mirabella, 41, drew No.5 on the ballot paper but was remaining upbeat about her placing.
“I think it’s the same as last time and people are smart enough, they vote for who they want to vote for irrespective of where they are on the ballot paper,” she said.
Labor candidate Zuvele Leschen, 49, was pleased to come in third.
“That’s a good place on the ballot paper to be and if I get any number ones, I know they are genuine votes for me and not donkeys,” she said.
Other candidates in the electorate are Jenny O’Connor (Greens), Mark Carey (Democrats) and Robert Cavedon (Family First).
Candidates are expected to decide on their preferences in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Australian Electoral Commission figures released yesterday show there are 92,558 people enrolled to vote in the Indi electorate, with 47,686 of those being women and 44,872 men.
