 It’s quite a coop

It’s quite a coop

HUME Highway motorists were given something to coo about yesterday.

A giant mobile home for 200 egg laying pigeons was towed to Melbourne on a custom-built low-loader trailer.

Designed by a Walla engineering company, the firm has made history by designing the first Australian pigeon loft made specifically to solve breeding problems.

Modern Engineering and Construction Co, which traditionally makes silos, was commissioned by the Melbourne council in May last year to design the nesting house.

Impressed by the company’s designs, the council selected the firm to build the mammoth steel pigeon loft for Batman Park, in the Melbourne CBD.

The loft has been designed to encourage pigeons to nest there while at the same time replacing the eggs they lay with artificial ones — this helps to control the population by preventing the birds from laying more eggs.

Modern Engineering and Construction Co managing director Andrew Kotzur said his company had managed to come up with a solution that was more cost effective than similar structures built in Europe.

“We’re confident that this will be successful and if it is, this design will be the beginning of many more to come,” he said.

The feathered residents fly into their new home today.
