Labor wins: Independents back Julia Gillard for Prime Minister

07 Sep, 2010 04:29 PM
LABOR will be returned to Government after the independents handed their support to Julia Gillard this afternoon.

After 17 days of deliberations, independents Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor backed a Julia Gillard Labor government.

Earlier, the third independent Bob Katter revealed at a separate news conference that he would be backing the Coalition.

Gillard will lead Australia's first minority government since 1940.

Labor now controls 76 votes in Parliament's lower house, with the Coalition on 74.

Mr Oakeshott said the parties had neglected country Australia for too long but the independent MPs had secured a package which would 'turbo-charge' regional areas.

Mr Windsor said he believed Labor's $43 billion national broadband network proposal was superior to the Coalition's policy and that it was a key factor in his decision.

Get used to what we've seen State Labor do in NSW for the past few years..... I just hope Victorians use there common sense in November.

Sofie and Sussan thanks for nothing, if we were marginal or independent we would have our cancer center and fibre broadband now.

Tony Windsor decided two weeks ago to retire at the next election. Oakeshott's is all about "what's in it for me" Lots of media stuff. Like him or loath him Bob Katter is genuine. Julia is going to consult with the first two about when she calls the next election! Maybe the timing will not be hers.

Great to have a leader we didn't elect, put into power by two independents who both admitted that she would lose if she faced another election.
