THESE little pups sure know how to win hearts.

The Labrador retriever has this year topped the list of breeds registered with Dogs NSW, an association that promotes the welfare of purebred dogs and responsible breeding.

The family friendly pet overtook last year’s most popular breed, the German shepherd.

These Labrador puppies, less than two months old, were bred by Wodonga woman Renee Doughty, who says she has already had strong interest from potential new owners on both sides of the border.

Albury veterinarian Dr Arthur Frauenfelder said Labradors’ gentle temperament made them a popular choice for families.

“The Labrador would be the best mid-size dog you can get,” he said.

“It can be very friendly with people and just so loving, but at the same time, any sense of danger around the house and they become the family guard.”
