Lending an ear, and funds

21/11/2008 8:57:00 AM
SOCIAL, sporting and tourism facilities are among the infrastructure eligible to be constructed or improved under prime minister Kevin Rudd's funding announcement.

Greater Taree City Council will receive close to $1million as part of the regional and local community infrastructure program announced in Canberra.

Some examples of the community infrastructure that would be eligible for the funding include:

* social and cultural infrastructure, such as town halls, community centres, libraries, parks and public squares;

* sport and recreation facilities, such as sporting grounds, stadiums, pools, walking tracks and playgrounds;

* tourism infrastructure, such as walkways and tourist information centres;

* access facilities, such as footbridges, bus shelters, jetties and boat ramps.

Greater Taree City Council is awaiting details of the funding and once these are known will be setting its priorities by reviewing its backlog of infrastructure works.

Mayor Paul Hogan said the second major pleasing outcome from the prime minister's meeting in Canberra with mayors representing councils from around the nation was a commitment to again open the door on constitutional recognition for local government with a follow up meeting to take place in Melbourne next month.

"I'm certainly interested in attending this forum on behalf of Greater Taree to add our council's support to this important consideration," Cr Hogan said.

He added that another pleasing outcome of the afternoon in parliament house was the availability of the prime minister's cabinet to speak to the mayors directly.

"I was able to speak to many of the prime minister's cabinet members, including the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Anthony Albanese."

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
