Alatalo Brothers will make a smaller contribution towards the intersection that will serve both the Harvey Norman shopping centre and a new Alatalo housing estate.
Border company Walsh Earthmoving Contractors was awarded a $1.3 million contract by the council this week.
Special projects manager Mauro Dei Agnoli said yesterday the roundabout was needed for the $25 million centre involving a new Harvey Norman superstore and 13 other shops.
“Work will start immediately and we expect to see the roundabout finished in July,” he said.
“It will include new street lighting.”
Mr Dei Agnoli said Walsh Earthmoving, as part of the contract, would reconstruct that part of Alexandra St behind the former greyhound track.
That work will provide for entrance and exit points for delivery trucks for Harvey Norman and the other 13 planned shops.
Shoppers will access the 523-space main car park from Borella Rd, adding significantly to the 8500 vehicles a day that now pass the site.
Alatalo Brothers’ development, Red Gum Gardens, will connect directly to the Riverina Highway at the new roundabout.
It will also provide an additional access to Peard’s Nursery, allowing the garden centre to further enhance its frontage to Borella Rd.
Zauner Constructions won a $14 million building contract for the Harvey Centre last month and has been asked to complete the job by Christmas.
Meanwhile, the council has called tenders to design and construct another section of Albury’s western ring road at Lavington.
It will link Burrows and Reservoir roads to Kaitlers Rd.
Stage 1 will involve roundabouts on Centaur and Urana roads and linking the two directly to Krautz St, with stages 2 and 3 extending the road to the intersection of Hague St and Kaitlers Rd.
The tenders will close on March 14.
