Lisa Mitchell wins major music gong

12 Mar, 2010 02:13 PM
ALBURY'S Lisa Mitchell has won the Australian Music Prize for 2009.

The former Australian Idol contestant trumped a field of nine other short-listed artists to win the award and the $30,000 cash prize.

A judging panel of 27 music industry representatives deliberated until this morning before deciding on Mitchell’s debut album Wonder as the winner.

Mitchell is on tour in the UK but sent a message via video.

“Thank you so much,” said the 19-year-old singer, who finished sixth in the 2006 season of Idol.

“It’s such a great award to receive and it’s very encouraging.”

The AMP, now in its fifth year, runs separate to the more mainstream ARIA awards, and is Australia’s answer to Britain’s prestigious Mercury Prize.
