THERE wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Lyn Wood accepted the Gavin Wood Member of the Year Perpetual Trophy at the Darlington Rural Fire Brigade on the weekend.
Darlington brig-ade captain, Mal Draper, said in his opinion there was no one else who could win it.
“Lyn won it hands down,” he said.
“She’s is someone who is always doing the hard yards… she never misses.”
Both Lyn and her husband Bob have been members of the brigade since 2002 and their son Gavin, who lost his battle with Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy earlier this year, was given honourary member status.
Gavin finally succumbed to his illness at the age of 22, but the perpetual trophy will see his legacy live on at the Brigade he loved so much.
He was a great friend to all the brigade members and in his will, the exceptional young man left $1,000 to the Darlington RFS.
The money was used to erect an honour board at the station and the remainder used for the perpetual trophy.
Mr Draper said the trophy was introduced into the brigade as a way of recognising extra ordinary commitment from members but was most importantly a way of keeping Gavin’s spirit alive.
He said it was fitting and well-deserved that it should be his mother Lyn who’s name will take pride of place as the first recipient of the award.
Mr Draper said Lyn was a vital member of the brigade who would turn her hand to anything and everything.
“Lyn never misses anything, she is the president, field officer, she turns up all the time,” he said.
“If anything needs to be done, Lyn will do it.”
