Man jailed for fatal cricket bat attack

20 Nov, 2009 06:56 PM
AN Albury man who bludgeoned another man to death with a cricket bat has been sentenced to jail over the savage attack.

Craig William Benbow was today ordered to spend a minimum of four years and six months in jail after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of Travis Jenning.

Supreme Court Justice Robert Hulme also ordered Benbow to a non-parole period of seven months.

With time already spent in custody Benbow is expected to out of jail by 2012.

Benbow had been drinking at a unit in Dight Street, Albury, with Travis Jennings and Lucas Collis on October 28, 2007.

Benbow had fallen asleep on Mr Collis' bed.

He had asked Mr Jenning to wake him.

Mr Jenning used a cricket bat to prod Benbow's arm two or three times in an attempt to wake him.

When Benbow woke, he pulled the bat away and swung it at Mr Jenning, hitting him in the head.

The blow caused him to fall to the floor.

While on the floor Mr Jenning received more blows to the head and torso.
