Man with distinctive belt sought for abduction

19 Mar, 2010 11:27 AM
POLICE believe a distinctive belt is the clue to help identify a man wanted for the abduction of a young girl near Wagga Wagga last month.

An extensive manhunt has been underway since Valentine's Day to find the man who grabbed the six-year-old girl at Mt Austin that morning.

The girl was grabbed by the man at 11.30am and driven from Macleay Street. She was dropped off not far from her home approximately 90 minutes later.

Police from Wagga Wagga Local Area Command and the State Crime Command have formed Strike Force Shell.

They have today released vital information about the man responsible.

He is described as being of white/European appearance, 35 to 45 years of age, solid/chubby build, with short brown balding hair.

He was wearing a long sleeve dark blue button-up shirt with a collar, blue jeans and work boots.

Detective Inspector Rod Smith from Wagga Wagga Local Area Command said the man was also wearing a distinctive leather belt.

"It had different coloured farm animals imprinted along the length of the belt, including horses, cows and pigs," Inspector Smith said.

"My investigators have attempted to find a similar looking one without success. The belt is quite unique and might even be a homemade one-off.

"If we can track down the belt, we believe we will find our abductor."

Tracking down the man's vehicle also remains a major focus of the investigation.

It is described as being a late model white Toyota Hilux dual cab utility with a tray back. The NSW registration is believed to start with BD, DB or similar.
