Medical board suspends surgeon

17/10/2008 10:05:00 AM
LEADING Border surgeon Roland Von Marburg has been banned from practising in NSW and Victoria.

The NSW Medical Board suspended the ear, nose and throat specialist from October 3 and the Medical Practitioners Board of Victoria has followed suit, in accordance with the Mutual Recognition Act, 1992.

The NSW board’s website names Mr Von Marburg on a list of doctors who have been suspended because of what it says are “issues relating to their professional conduct or health”.

A media spokeswoman for the board told The Border Mail she could not comment on individual cases but said her organisation was required to refer the matter to the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission “as soon as practical or within seven days” under section 66 of the Medical Practice Act.

The commission declined to speak about Mr Von Marburg’s case, citing legislative constraints.

Mr Von Marburg had told The Border Mail he wanted to talk about the matter yesterday.

But last night he sent a text message saying he could not comment.

Mr Von Marburg graduated from Monash University in 1988 with a bachelor of medicine-bachelor of surgery and has been operating on the Border since 2000.

In August he told The Border Mail he had more than 100 children on waiting lists for non-urgent ear, nose and throat operations.

The Border Mail yesterday was unable to contact Wodonga Regional Health Service chief executive Ray Sweeney for comment about the impact of the suspension.

Albury-Wodonga Private Hospital chief executive Stuart Schneider earlier this week declined to comment as to whether any surgeon had recently cancelled surgery lists.

Albury Base Hospital site manager Catherine O’Connell yesterday said that Mr Von Marburg did not have a formal agreement with the hospital.

“Dr Von Marburg has not worked at Albury Base Hospital as a visiting medical officer ... since June 2005.”

I cannot believe that Mr Von Marberg has been struck off?? I can honestly say that he was the best ENT specialist and detected early problems with my son. More than I can say for other specialists. Who thought I was just over reacting. My son is now 10 and has perfect hearing Thankyou Mr Von Marberg.

Can't believe this suspension, Dr Von Marburg has to be one of the best specialists we have had contact with, and anyone that you mention his name to immediately has something positive to say about him. surely this must be a mistake

I agree joymid. Mr Von Marburg is one of the nicest, most professional and caring surgeons. He operated on both of my children and did such an amazing job. He has an exceptionally caring bedside manner and he is the best ENT surgeon Albury/ Wodonga has. I would never believe he could do anything wrong and find it incredible that someone so brilliant could be suspended. My thoughts are with Mr Von Marburg and his beautiful family.

Rolland has only ever been completely professional and fully explanatory in my dealings with him. I am LOATH to go any where else. 3 members of my family have been opperated on by Rolland, and their pain & discomfort taken away for ever. The 4th was on the waiting list due to be opperated on in December. Now my daughter is going to have to wait a about 2 years and be subjected to a surgeon who does not even care about the person they opperate on. Rolland Von Marburg cared.

as a recent patient of mr marburg I think the so called medical board have got it wrong. I read what happened on my computer, its all there in black and white, all the evidence was so scechy, its so hard to believe they came to this ridiculous decicion. now the whole district has lost one very profesional and highly qualified surgen there should be a public uproar. dam the medical board, did they consider the general public, and our local health system, or were they out to to make themselves look good.

We actually have hardly any specialist left now. Of the small amount of doctors in the area 36 are overseas trainned doctors. We have these doctors by recruiting them from some of the poorest places on earth. The fact is Albury Wodonga is really desperate and does not have enough doctors as the Liberal Federal Government cut doctors trainning by 20percent when they came to power, and only increased trainning just before the last election that they lost. It takes 13 years to train a specialist. We are now very far behind and any losss of a specialist is a disaster that few people understand the impact of. My partner is a doctor and we are looking at leaving the area as the workload is already to great. Wodonga Counil has refused to work with local doctors to help get new doctors, and presently many are leaving to queensland where there the work load is less and the local councils do everything possible to keep doctors and help the community.

It is reassuring to know the public "know" the truth by their personal experiences noted above and take umbrage to the sensationlism by Mick McGlone. Does his greed to grab a story, with no substance, benefit the community at large? Maybe if he spent his time running some good news story, his newspaper would have more credence. Rest assured Mr von Marburg will be back consulting very soon.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
