LEADING Border surgeon Roland Von Marburg has been banned from practising in NSW and Victoria.
The NSW Medical Board suspended the ear, nose and throat specialist from October 3 and the Medical Practitioners Board of Victoria has followed suit, in accordance with the Mutual Recognition Act, 1992.
The NSW board’s website names Mr Von Marburg on a list of doctors who have been suspended because of what it says are “issues relating to their professional conduct or health”.
A media spokeswoman for the board told The Border Mail she could not comment on individual cases but said her organisation was required to refer the matter to the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission “as soon as practical or within seven days” under section 66 of the Medical Practice Act.
The commission declined to speak about Mr Von Marburg’s case, citing legislative constraints.
Mr Von Marburg had told The Border Mail he wanted to talk about the matter yesterday.
But last night he sent a text message saying he could not comment.
Mr Von Marburg graduated from Monash University in 1988 with a bachelor of medicine-bachelor of surgery and has been operating on the Border since 2000.
In August he told The Border Mail he had more than 100 children on waiting lists for non-urgent ear, nose and throat operations.
The Border Mail yesterday was unable to contact Wodonga Regional Health Service chief executive Ray Sweeney for comment about the impact of the suspension.
Albury-Wodonga Private Hospital chief executive Stuart Schneider earlier this week declined to comment as to whether any surgeon had recently cancelled surgery lists.
Albury Base Hospital site manager Catherine O’Connell yesterday said that Mr Von Marburg did not have a formal agreement with the hospital.
“Dr Von Marburg has not worked at Albury Base Hospital as a visiting medical officer ... since June 2005.”
