Mexico here we come — by ship

06 Jul, 2009 12:00 AM
A TRIP to Mexico for an indefinite period to undertake volunteer and community work seems more likely to fall within the realm of school leavers looking for a gap-year alternative.

But Border residents David and Heather Rogers are leaving their full-time careers as a nurse and marketing manager respectively for an adventure of a lifetime on the other side of the world.

Even the journey to Mexico will be an adventure in itself.

The couple will board the French container ship Utrillo in Melbourne on July 22, arriving 26 days later in Savannah, Georgia in the US, via two ports in New Zealand, the Panama Canal and Punta Manzanillo in Colombia.

Mr Rogers, a former sailor in the merchant navy for 16 years, said it was his experience at sea that encouraged him to taking the option to sail to Mexico.

“I figured after the madness of packing up our lives here that we would have four weeks at leisure before arriving in Mexico,” he said.

Mrs Rogers said Guanajuato was a city in central Mexico with a population of about 100,000 people.

The couple chose the city after being told of its charms by Benalla author Cate Kennedy who had lived nearby in Mexico for a number of years and then tested their theory with a visit to Mexico a year ago.

“It is a university town with what they claim is the biggest and best arts festival in Mexico,” Mrs Rogers said.

Mr Rogers is keen to volunteer in a health capacity, while Mrs Rogers is considering teaching English as a second language.

“The language school also has an orphanage so that might be our first exposure to volunteering,” she said.

Mrs Rogers said walking away from jobs they both really enjoyed was a difficult proposition but after marrying in January this year the couple wanted to “have a few adventures and do it now”.
