Historical society committee member Jim Parker said yesterday he was stunned Mrs Murphy had nothing significant named after her despite a 23-year stint with the council in senior roles.
She replaced her father John Woodland as shire secretary in 1913 and served in the role for a record two decades.
Woodland Grove and Woodland Street are named after Mr Woodland.
He came to Wodonga in the 1850s and taught at the Green Hills School before joining the council.
“Something needs to be put in Wodonga for Rose Murphy for the services she rendered to the town,” Mr Parker said.
“She also deputised for her father on the water trust and other things.
“There definitely should be something named after her. The Cube should be named after her.”
Woodland Grove is located nearby the former entertainment centre which has been demolished and replaced by The Cube, which is nearing completion.
Mrs Murphy also served as shire treasurer from 1908 to 1913 and her two decades as shire secretary eclipses the 14 years served by Peter Marshall as the council’s chief executive officer.
Last week Patience Harrington became the first woman to hold down the council’s top job since Mrs Murphy.
Joan Kracke was acting shire secretary in 1943-46.
Mr Woodland lived in Sydney for 10 years before coming to Wodonga.
The Green Hills School in West Wodonga where he taught opened in 1850 and closed in 1870.
The council’s place names committee is chaired by Cr Rod Wangman.
He could not be reached for comment yesterday.
