THE most promising young water skiers in Australia will be competing in Wodonga this weekend with a chance to qualify for the national titles in Perth.
They will be skiing in the second leg of the Malibu Series and competing for national points and rankings as well as big prizes.
“Anyone can enter but we’ve had so many entries this year we’ve had to reject some,” Australian Watersking and Wakeboard Federation president Gary Humphrey said.
“We have 55 skiers and that kind of interest and support for the sport is very encouraging.”
Participant s’ ages range from six to over 50 and there is a big focus on youngsters.
“We’ve always had a strong junior development program,” Mr Humphrey said.
“We get them when they are young and teach them the correct technique.”
The event is held annually in seven legs including Temora, Wodonga, Canberra, Sydney, Newcastle and Port Macquarie.
Mr Humphrey said Albury was one of the highest-profile clubs in Australia.
“It’s recognised as one of the best sites in the country and we will be holding the highest ranking junior tournament in the southern hemisphere next year,” he said.
The event will be held from 8am today and tomorrow at the Water Parklands on Lincoln Causeway.
