New room gets a real workout

A VIRUS in his middle ear left retired cabinetmaker Alex Ramsay off balance.

The problem also sapped some of his power but thanks to a strength training room at Chiltern’s community health centre, the 64-year-old is feeling good again.

“When I started I couldn’t do some of the exercises without hanging onto a chair because I didn’t have the balance, now I can,” Mr Ramsay said.

The Chiltern resident, who retired four years ago, does leg exercises and has moved from lifting 500 grams to five kilograms in his twice weekly sessions.

Yesterday the room was officially opened.

Indigo North Health allied health assistant Maree Murphy said each week more than 30 people use the room which was funded by $24,000 from the Latipsoh fund-raising campaign, Victorian Health Department and the Regional Primary Health Program.

“The people who use it have been physiotherapy assessed so they may need it for falls and balance rehabilitation and for strength training,” Mrs Murphy said.
