 New Wodonga shopping centre deal

New Wodonga shopping centre deal

24 Aug, 2010 09:26 AM
WOOLWORTHS will build the $20 million supermarket and shopping centre at White Box Rise.

Yesterday the original proponents for the site, Border investors represented by Albury’s WHK Property Services, announced the sale to the national supermarket chain.

Does Wodonga need another major chain shopping centre? Leave comment below.

As many as 200 people are expected to be employed at the supermarket and accompanying shops.

It will be the first branded Woolworths in Wodonga, the retail giant represented by Safeway stores in Wodonga Centro and High Street.

It follows the national chain’s $5 million investment in a supermarket at the recently opened Thurgoona Plaza.

Yesterday Woolworths community relations manager Simon Berger said it hoped to open the White Box Rise shop by Christmas next year.

“The plan is to build a convenient neighbourhood shopping centre, including a full-range supermarket,” he said.

“The configuration is still being developed but in addition to the supermarket there will be about 18 specialty shops.

“Our research shows that there is a demand in a residential estate that is enjoying unprecedented growth and part of a general growth corridor for the city.

“It will be a modern supermarket that makes energy savings and returns a lower carbon footprint than our older stores.”

Yesterday’s sale brings to an end three months of speculation with earthworks contractors having stopped work on the site at the corner of Victoria Cross Parade and Payne Street in April.

A year ago WHK announced plans for a $20 million White

Box Rise plaza, including a 3200-square metre supermarket, about the same size as Coles Birallee and bigger than Thurgoona’s new Woolworths.

WHK principal Gary West confirmed the sale was completed yesterday.

“After lengthy negotiations, the owner syndicate of the White Box Rise Shopping Centre has decided to sell the commercial land to Woolworths,” he said.

“It was significant that local investors had supported the initial concept for the White Box Rise development and that Woolworths has confidence in finalising the development.”

“The wider community will benefit through the development of new businesses and the creation of new jobs.”

How many shopping centres and supermarkets does Albury and Wodonga really need? Build one new one and another one will close. Seems like the developers would have us all think we need a shopping centre on our back door step. People of Albury and Wodonga just look at the city of Griffith and see what has happened with the development of supermarkets and shoppings complexes -some specialty shops have never been filled. Maybe we will progress to the days of shopping on line - that's how we do do our fruit and vegtables already and free up our precious time to do more important things than shop.

If they do close the one in high street, then that will probably be a better site for a future cinema for wodonga????

This just confirms Wodonga's status as a bedroom suburb of Albury. Wodonga is already full of supermarkets, what we need is some department stores, at the moment we have only one. If you need to do any serious shopping you go to Albury - is that ever going to change?

I don't think we really need another supermarket as people above have posted. However I would of loved the new centre to include a BIG W !. Would be so convenient for all the people in Wodonga and this side of the border to shop in one here!

The new Wollies is much needed in south wodonga. Albury has heaps of IGAs servicing its suburbs, south wodonga people deserve this development which wont compete with High Street, which is over 3 kms away. The naysayers are costing Wodonga jobs

I think its a great development through a growth area in Wodonga. But we still desperately need our main street to be built up, move the banks, the real estates, the tattoo parlour and get some shops in there that will promote the main street as somewhere to go and stay. Move those other shops to the side streets. And YES we need BIG W.
