Nursing home in spotlight

30 Jul, 2008 12:00 AM
AN Albury nursing home will come under Federal Government scrutiny following the discovery of severely underweight patients at a related property in Ballarat.

The Albury and District Nursing Home is owned by Aged Care Services Australia Group, which also operates the Kirralee Nursing Home at Ballarat.

Two patients at the Ballarat home, aged 98 and 86, were reportedly found to weigh less than 25kg, with a snap Government inspection last week revealing 10 patients were significantly underweight.

As a result, the Federal Ageing Minister, Justine Elliot, announced more than 30 other homes owned by the group, including Albury, would be vetted.

“If there are any problems that are identified then appropriate action will be taken,” Mrs Elliot said.

A spokesman for Aged Care Services Australia Group said the firm would co-operate with the review.

“All of our facilities are fully compliant with the aged care accreditation standards,” he said.

“As part of the accreditation agency’s contact program, most of our facilities have been visited by the agency recently.

“We will continue to fully co-operate with the department and the accreditation agency as we firmly believe that all of our facilities deliver the highest standards of care for all of our residents.”

The Albury and District Nursing Home in David Street is a 59-bed high-care centre.

Its website says that “involvement from family members at any time is encouraged — be it, having a meal in the dining room, joining the very dynamic relative/resident committee, helping on outings or just sitting outside in the secure, shaded courtyard with your loved ones”.

The Federal Government has imposed strict sanctions on the East Ballarat nursing home after it was found it did not comply in 33 out of 44 areas.
