OLIVE Ward is living proof that chocolate can be good for you.
Albury’s newest centenarian yesterday admitted to “always” being a sweet tooth, with her greatest love being for ginger chocolates.
“They say ginger is good for you,” she said with a cheeky grin.
Mrs Ward (nee Hodge) will celebrate her 100th birthday today at the Riverwood Retirement Village.
On Saturday, a dinner attended by about 250 friends and family was held at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, where Mrs Ward is a regular visitor.
Her lounge is almost overflowing with cards and gifts, including letters from the Queen and Australian Governor-General.
Apart from the chocolate, Mrs Ward credits her long life to her family and God.
“I’ve had two good husbands and my family has been so wonderful, I think that helps you,” she said.
“The love of your loved ones and the love of God, most of all.”
Step-daughter Heather Smith flew across from Perth to help Mrs Ward celebrate the milestone.
“She’s marvellous,” Ms Smith said.
“She’s been saying to me lately ‘My legs are no good, I can hardly walk’ and I was really worried.
“But she’s no different to what she was five years ago.”
Mrs Ward was born in Albury and lived there for 40 years before marrying and moving to Sydney.
She moved back 25 years ago.
Mrs Ward has two step-daughters and two grandchildren.
