Albury Airport recorded 104.2 millimetres in the 24 hours to 9am yesterday, the highest March daily fall since records began in 1858, and another 40 millimetres fell over the next six hours.
Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Richard Russell said the previous record for March in Albury was 69.9?millimetres on March 15, 1901.
Mr Russell said Albury’s total for the 24 hours was more than three times the average March monthly rainfall for the city.
Wodonga had much less rain in the same 24 hours, recording only 88.4?millimetres, though falls balanced out over three days.
This was the highest March daily rainfall in Wodonga since 1926.
Yarrawonga copped another 94 millimetres to give more than 200 millimetres since Sunday.
Mount Buffalo recorded Victoria’s highest daily rainfall of 124.8 millimetres in the 24 hours to 9am, though this wasn’t a record for the mountain.
Wangaratta had exceptional falls on Tuesday morning followed by dry weather until another deluge began on Wednesday evening.
It brought one of the wettest March days at Wangaratta for 100 years.
Rutherglen recorded slightly more than Wangaratta with 80.6 millimetres, a third more than the previous March daily record of 60.7 millimetres set in 1939.
Tallangatta and Yackandandah also broke rainfall records, recording 103.6 millimetres and 102.6 millimetres in the 24 hours to 9am yesterday.
These were the highest March daily totals for Tallangatta since 1931 and Yackandandah since 1939.
North of the Murray, Henty received a mere 24 millimetres, one of the lowest in the Riverina, but Corowa had 74 millimetres and Mulwala 85 millimetres.
The bureau forecasts a mostly dry day today for the Border and North East but more rain tomorrow, heavy at times and with maximum temperatures around 21 degrees.
Several sunny days are forecast to start on Monday, though with temperature in the mid-20s.
The long-term rainfall average for March in Albury is 31.4 millimetres.
