Plan ‘will punish law-abiding people’

01 Mar, 2010 12:00 AM
THE son of Albury’s liquor accord leader says plans to shut down pubs and clubs at 1.30am punishes the wrong people.

Bishop Betteridge, 22, says the early closing time will affect everyone under 30.

He says most people under 30 are removed from the violence.

“Most of the people out in Dean Street at night aren’t involved in this,” he said.

“I work so I don’t go out every night but when I do go out I rarely feel threatened.

“Admittedly I don’t walk down dark alleys but in the pubs I feel safe.”

The IT officer at an Albury high school, and son of Albury councillor Daryl, lashed out at the plans being considered by police.

“Instead of focusing on the violence and problems that Albury has why don’t we have a look at some of the law-abiding people who will be affected by this policy,” he wrote on The Border Mail website.

“I don’t understand why those like myself who have never had an issue with the law or violence should be restricted on when I can go out and where I can go out by an authority that is employed to serve the public.

“All I can hope for is that the public get a say in an open consultation instead of backhanded threatening and forceful shoving of policy onto the people.”
