Police push 1.30am nightspot closure in Albury

27 Feb, 2010 11:35 AM
POLICE will seek a compulsory 1.30am closure for all late-trading Albury pubs and nightclubs as they move to curb alcohol-fuelled violence in the city.

Albury local area commander Supt Gary Commins exclusively revealed his radical plan to The Border Mail yesterday.

“We can turn our faces from it and say it’s just part and parcel of the culture, but we’ve got to do something about that culture, otherwise we’re just going to have people continuing to behave in this way,” he said.

Do you support a 1.30am closure for Albury venues? Have your say in the form below

“I’m looking for a changing culture ... in the times that patrons go to the licensed premises and hopefully a change in the attitude to just hanging around the main street.

“Something’s got to be done; we can’t just continue chasing our tails with the problems that are occurring.”

Police will probe the possibility of using the city’s assault and anti-social behaviour data to seek trading-hour restrictions on Albury nightspots through the NSW Offi ce of Liquor, Gaming and Racing.

Supt Commins said Albury’s SS & A and Commercial clubs were not likely to be included in any action; both venues participate in the existing 1.30am lockout but trade until 2am on Saturdays and Sundays.

“I’m aiming not for the registered clubs but for the late-trading licensed premises we’re continually having problems with,” he said.

Supt Commins said nightspots’ late trading hours and alcohol-related violence had been among the key issues raised with the city’s senior police during community consultation sessions at Albury and Lavington shopping centres earlier this week.

The commander wants to see hotel patrons go out and return home earlier.

“While I believe the crime associated with patrons of late-trading licensed establishments has decreased, I do not believe it is to a level that this community would be happy with,” Supt Commins said.

Supt Commins said he would be pursuing “the possibility of seeking 1.30am closures of licensed premises rather than the 1.30am lockout”.

Totally agree to earlier closures and to encourage people to go out earlier, and finish earlier. Should also apply to the clubs as they should not receive any special treatment over private enterprise hotels.

Instead of focusing on the violence and problems that albury has why don't we have a look at some of the law abiding people who will be affected by this policy. I don't understand why those like myself who have never had an issue with the law or violence should be restricted on when i can go out and where i can go out by an authority that is employed to serve the public. I think the local police should leave policy making to those voted by the public (that they have an equal right to vote in as anyone else) and instead focus on enforcing such policy's that have been set by those publicly voted. All i can hope for is that the public get a say in an open consultation instead of backhanded threatening and forceful shoving of policy onto the people.

Ridiculous! Everyone is being punished for the actions of a few.. What about harsher penalties for troublemakers?

Such a shame for all the other well behaved people that can control their behavior when they drink...So far there is no answer for the violence so I guess they have to try everything once....

Why dont the cops make more of a presence in Dean Street on Friday and Saturday nights? They should be on the beat after 12am in numbers. They can stop the young idiots loitering and making trouble, and pick up those that are abusive and and anti-social. Ridiculous to punish the law abiders for the actions of a few.

I think its an idea that can help solve alot of alburys problems. What about venues stop serving after 2am? but keeping venues open for party-goers to keep enjoying themselves? There should be harsher penalties put in place for the drunken idiots who ruin everyone else's evenings out!

this idea isnt a new one or a successful one, it was actually part of the original idea brought about during dicussions when the "voluntary" lockout was put in place and visitors from wagga council/police said how much it had failed there, what makes albury any different? lets not forget about the individuals/families whose economical situations will be worsened due to less working hours and complete loss of penalty rates. I fail to see how having people drinking earlier will change anything, so they will be drunk when people are out doing late night shopping instead of late at night when our children arent exposed to it. If police actually issued Fail To Quit fines perhaps these offenders would think twice the next time the thought about being a problem, nobody likes waking up to a $500 fine. There have also been vicinity laws passed, which allows the issue of fines for persons refused entry or ejected from a licenced premises who fails to leave the area of the premises, which the police fail to enforce. Added to Fail to Quit that puts it at $1100 if you act stupid after being refused or ejected yet this never seems to occur and instead we get this. why should we accept this?

I think it`s about time more jails should be built and alot more money (our taxes) should be put into our justice and correctional system. The police and the judges hands are tied with no where to put the offenders. These offenders just thumb their noses up at the law because they know at most they are going to get a suspended sentence and a small fine. With all this political mud slinging about the 4 deaths of insulation installers (which is not good) neither one of the parties have bought up the issue of peoples personal safety and how many deaths and injuries have been caused by violence as well as all the other issues of peoples attitude about the law. The public should be outraged they are supposed to be protecting us.
