 Presents arrive early in Samoa

Presents arrive early in Samoa

25 Nov, 2009 12:00 AM
WHAT was always going to be a sad Christmas for the people of Samoa will now be made a little bit brighter thanks to the generosity of some Border citizens and businesses.

Albury’s John Ferris and 11 mates, mostly from Albury-Wodonga, leave today to visit the Pacific nation that was ravaged by a tsunami in September.

And they go bearing gifts — of the sporting goods variety.

A chance conversation with his son inspired Mr Ferris to turn a reunion holiday into a charitable mission as well.

“My son Peter has a mate, Kava Mulipola, who comes from Samoa,” he said.

“Four of his family were killed in the tsunami and three are still missing.

“We learned they would be extremely grateful if they could get their hands on some sporting clothing and equipment.

The final tally includes 60 rugby balls, 40 AFL and basketball guernseys and singlets and other assorted clothing and apparel.
