Father Michael Kennedy, 43, will replace Monsignor William Fulton, 80, who retired from parish duties in April.
Meanwhile, Father Brendan Lee will continue as administrator of the parish.
Bishop Gerard Hanna announced Father Kennedy’s appointment this week.
Father Kennedy was born and raised at Wagga and was a teacher at Xavier High School in Albury until 1991.
He then began seven years’ study for the priesthood, starting at the Vianney College seminary at Wagga and then spending five years in Rome.
Father Kennedy was ordained in 1991 and served parishes in Griffith, Wagga, Holbrook and Albury before his present appointment as parish priest of Leeton and dean of that part of the Wagga diocese.
In 2006, Father Kennedy was assistant priest in Albury and as president of the Australian Confraternity of Catholic Clergy hosted a visit by the Vatican’s ambassador to Australia, Archbishop Ambrose Battista De Paoli.
“I’m very much looking forward to returning to Albury in February and meeting old friends,’’ Father Kennedy said yesterday.
Meanwhile, Bishop Hanna left the diocese this week to join 37 other Australian Catholic bishops on their Ad Limina spiritual pilgrimage to the Vatican.
