THIS will be the new “Gateway to Albury-Wodonga” when the rail bypass project opens next year.
Trains will pass under the new Melrose Drive bridge, which will rest on concrete abutments.
Wodonga’s new passenger station will be located immediately next to the bridge on the left.
V/Line passenger trains will stop at this station, as well as Albury but Countrylink XPT trains will stop only in Albury.
Wodonga’s station will include a bus interchange and a car park for 65 cars.
The 5km bypass will have two tracks until it meets the Murray River rail bridge, where only a single rail will be used.
The South Improvement Alliance continues to work on preparing the short bypass section between Melrose Drive and the Lincoln Causeway, where another railway bridge is being constructed over the road lanes.
A temporary road diversion remains open to maintain access between Melrose Drive and Moloney Drive.
The new road bridge is due to be in place in late November.
Stage 2 of this section of work is scheduled to begin on Monday, November 9, and will mean a full road closure of part of Melrose Drive and the on-ramp leading down to the Hume Freeway’s northbound lane.
The causeway bridge will have four spans, each about 20m long, and a height clearance of 5.4m.
A finishing date for the bypass has still not been announced but will be some time next year.
The alliance involves the Australian Rail Track Corporation, John Holland, MVM Rail and O’Donnell Griffin, while local contractors have been engaged for earthmoving and other specialist jobs.
The bypass project forms part of the wider upgrade works on the $612 million North East Rail Revitalisation Project between Albury and Seymour.
