Relay to help soles touched by cancer

02 Jul, 2009 01:00 AM
THE starting gun has fired on one of Albury-Wodonga’s largest fundraisers.

The Border Relay for Life, to be held at Bunton Park in North Albury on October 24 and 25, was launched at the Three Monkeys Tavern last night.

The Cancer Council fundraiser is already off to a great start with the Wodonga Homemaker Centre committing to a two-year major sponsorship deal.

Relay for Life chairwoman, Anne Hayward, said the sponsorship would allow the continued development of the event.

“Wodonga Homemaker Centre coming on board as our major sponsor will allow us to focus on encouraging event participating and co-ordinating a successful fundraising event,” she said.

Last year 82 teams of about 2000 people helped raise almost $200,000 for cancer research.

NSW Cancer Council regional manager Annemaree Binger hoped another successful result could be achieved this year.

“Last year they raised quite a substantial amount of money and I guess that’s where we are aiming towards again,” she said.

Teams of 10-15 people take turns to walk around the Bunton Park to honour lives of people touched by cancer.
