AN Albury man accused of deliberately running over a kangaroo and dragging its body through Wodonga will also face driving charges, as police called on a youth also involved to hand himself in.
While police have refused to release his name, The Border Mail can reveal Albury man Nigel Franks is the person charged over the offences.
Franks eventually handed himself in to police at 10pm on Friday, after he was contacted by investigators.
He will face court in February accused of at least eight crimes.
On top of two charges of aggravated cruelty against a kangaroo, police said yesterday he was also facing
two counts of careless driving, offensive behaviour and
driving in a dangerous manner.
That list could grow today, with police expected to use the Wildlife Act to lay more charges against him.
Yesterday police said they were hoping to speak to a North East youth they believe was in the car with Franks when the kangaroo and its joey were killed last Wednesday.
Sgt Damian Bould, from Wodonga Police, said they knew who the youth was and were hoping he would come forward to be interviewed.
Franks is accused of deliberately driving over an eastern grey kangaroo, before kicking it to death and using a car to drag its carcass two kilometres through the streets of Wodonga. Its grazed and bloodied body was found on High Street at 3.30am on Tuesday by a woman who was passing by.
The animal’s neck and arm were still tied to a rope.
Police have also alleged Franks killed the kangaroo’s joey in “inhumane circumstances”.
Sgt Bould said they also wanted to speak to anyone who might be able to provide more information about the incident.
He said police had been liaising with the Department of Sustainability and Environment.
That was in order to determine whether the accused had committed offences under the Wildlife Act.
