Revellers trash lake foreshore

28 Jan, 2012 01:00 AM
YOUNG people are being urged to show more respect after two popular spots at Lake Hume were trashed on Australia Day.

Empty beer and cooler bottles and smashed water toys were strewn across the foreshore after one of the busiest days on the lake for the summer.

The Pines was the worst hit with bins located less than 100 metres away unused and Kookaburra Point also littered with garbage including broken glass the day after thousands spent the public holiday at the lake.

Wodonga police Kevin Mack was at Lake Hume with his family on Thursday and said the bulk of the mess at The Pines was left by two large groups of young people.

He is aware of some of the people who created the mess with their ages ranging from 16 to 24 years.

Mr Mack said he would pass their details to Albury police and vowed to take up the issue with Albury and Wodonga councils and Goulburn Murray Water to ensure there was no repeat next year.

“I was there and know they were the ones who left the rubbish,” he said.

“The issue now is we will have to task patrols to make sure people are picking up their rubbish.”

Those found guilty of littering face fines up to $250.

Plastic rubbish bags used for a large water slide were also part of the mess at The Pines.

“There is always alcohol involved and do they feel like picking up after themselves after they have had a gutful?” Mr Mack said.

“I think not, but I don’t know who they think is going to clean up after them.”

Wodonga’s Andrew Harris, who headed to Lake Hume yesterday with his family, spent close to half-an-hour cleaning up the mess.

“It was shocking,” he said.

“It was left in one big pile and took me 20 minutes to clean up.

“If five blokes had of done it yesterday, it would have taken them less than five minutes.

“It would be less than a 60-metre walk to where the bins were.”

Mr Mack said young people should have more respect for the area.

“Everybody has a responsibility to their own environment,” he said.

“The bigger issue is safety and the mess that goes into the water we drink.”

Well, it has become National Bogan Day for some, or a lot, hasn't it. Probably the same creeps that try and get as much booze in them as possible on Anzac Day and pretend they are respectful of the day.

We go to the lake quite often and always spend the first 10 to 15 minutes picking up broken glass. I have taught my 3 girls, to always pick up after themselves, no matter where they are. It is not that difficult to take a plastic bag, pick up your rubbish, and either put it in the nearest bin, or take it home with you.

We were up atkookaburra point, with our 3 yo and 1 yo. There was lots of young people up there partying which is fine, except for the large number that decided it was a great idea to do circle work in the car, one did it right near us, put dust every where and were less than 30 mtrs from where our boys were playing. Directly opposite us was a very large group, who had at

East 200 bottles thrown at the waters edge. Then to top it off our 1 year old picked up a piece of broken glass from one of the numerous broken bottles with 50 mtrsofus. We ended up leaving. Council is a joke on this.

It saddens and angers me that families as well as young folk will leave trash strewn along the edge of Lake Hume even when there are bins nearby. Dirty nappies and other garbage is left there on a regular basis with no thought that it spoils the facility for everyone else. I wish I had the power to dump the rubbish they leave back into their lounge rooms to seehow they would like it.

Just an hour ago (330pm Sat), in broad daylight, leaving the KFC driveway here in Albury, I just witnessed a passenger in a P-plate Commodore dump his rubbish straight out of the window.

Its just remarkable the complete lack of respect that some people have for their country and the environment.
