'Roo-dragger' missing, protesters wait

08 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
AN Albury man accused of deliberately running over a kangaroo and dragging its body through Wodonga made no appearance in Wodonga Court yesterday.

Half a dozen members of the Australian Society for Kangaroos turned up to the courthouse with placards and a six-month-old joey for the appearance of Nigel Franks but were left disappointed.

But the activists were in court as solicitor Mario Vaccaro had the matter adjourned to April 4 but not before magistrate Paul Smith questioned Franks’ non-appearance.

“He should be here,” Mr Smith said.

“These are serious offences and I think people in these matters should be here.”

Mr Vaccaro told Mr Smith Franks was staying with family at Orbost in East Gippsland.

Franks, 19, faces two charges of aggravated cruelty against a kangaroo, offensive behaviour and driving in a dangerous manner.

He is accused of deliberately driving over an eastern grey kangaroo before kicking it to death and using a car to drag its carcass two kilometres through the streets of Wodonga.

This fellow had the bravado to do what he allegedly did. He should have had the courage to face his accusers.

I agree with Millsy. It just shows that the perpetrators of cruelty are really gutless cowards.

Agree with above comments but why now is the TV showing Save the kangaroo adverts so frequently... What he did was wrong but roos are a 6" rabbit that do at times need to be humanly controlled.

Franks now further thumbs his nose at the law by not presenting to the Court when required by our judicial system. This is not the sort of person any community would want to have residing in it. Is it Wodonga?

Two things of interest here. Firstly, just proves how wilfully disobedient these people are toward the Judiciary. Treated like a joke. Secondly, like NSW how weak the Judicial system is in Victoria with the Magistrate other than a few soft words, 'O alright see you in April, obviously when it suits you. What a joke.

A message to 'Local'. -

When did kangaroos change from being an icon to become a pest? And the question is; Should any living creature be treated like this? I believe in Karma, you better hope you do not come back as a 'pest' animal.
