Royal toast for Rutherglen wine

19 Oct, 2011 12:14 PM
HER Majesty the Queen will tipple on some of the North East’s finest during her visit to Australia this week.

Rutherglen Estate’s 2005 Noble Botrytis Muscadelle is one of just four wines carefully selected for the royal luncheon at Government House on Sunday.

It has been paired with dessert, which a Leatherwood honey pannacotta with mixed berries.

Rutherglen Estates winemaker Marc Scalzo said the Muscadelle would be an “absolutely perfect” partner.

Mr Scalzo only heard about the royal honour this morning when his aunty, who had read the menu in a Canberra newspaper, rang with the good news.

The Queen was last in Albury in 1988. Click here for archive photos from that memorable day.

He said appearing on the Queen’s lunch menu rated highly among career highlights.

“It’s a real honour, to tell you the truth,” Mr Scalzo said.

“When people put something like this (menu) together they are looking for the best of Australian food and wine.

“The three other wines being served are acknowledged as icon wines of Australia, so to be placed alongside them is really very pleasing.”

Also starring will be the 2006 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay (Margaret River, Western Australia), the 1994 Henschke Hill of Grace Shiraz (Kyneton, South Australia) and the 2006 Clover Hill Sparkling Wine (Pipers River, Tasmania).

Entree will be a gravlax of ocean trout with avocado and citrus salad and toasted macadamias.

For the main a fillet of angus beef on mushroom duxelle with red wine jus, fondant potato and spring vegetables will be served.

The Noble Botrytis Muscadelle is no longer for sale. Several bottles are proudly on display in Rutherglen Estate’s museum cellar and Mr Scalzo is unsure where the Government House’s head chef Stephen Evered got hold of the wine.

“I can only presume they kept it the Government House cellar,” he said.

Government house officials have decided not to release the full list of guests attending the event in honour of the monarch but actor Geoffrey Rush, paralympian Kurt Fearnley and Catherine Hamlin will be among the lucky 48.
