Security guards to roam street

13 Sep, 2008 12:00 AM
A TRIO of Albury nightspots will join forces to patrol the CBD in a bid to curb alcohol related violence.

The Bended Elbow, The New Albury Hotel and Roi Bar will employ two security guards each to patrol Dean Street, from Kiewa Street to David Street, from 11.30pm on Friday and Saturday nights.

The patrols start Friday with police supporting the initiative.

The venues agreed to the security plan yesterday as part of a conference with police and the Liquor Administration Board.

The security guards from each venue will work during designated hours.

New Albury Hotel guards will patrol from their venue, up Dean Street to Olive Street from 11.30pm to 2.30am.

The Bended Elbow and Roi Bar guards will patrol from 2am until one hour after their last patron leaves.

Both will patrol Dean Street from David Street to QEII Square, with Roi Bar also including Westpac Lane and the Olive Street taxi rank area.

New Albury Hotel licensee Craig Shearer said the two extra guards would cost him about $30,000 a year but the measure would help clean up Dean Street.
