SES warns Wangaratta of 3m wave of water

09 Sep, 2010 10:15 AM
THE SES has this morning warned Wangaratta residents that a two to three metre wave of water would be released if a flood levee breaks.

The emergency service's regional manager Keith O'Brien told a media conference in Wangaratta that there are still grave concerns about the safety of the levee which is designed to protect Wilson Road residents.

He said major pressure would be exerted by river waters on the levee for at least a week and a two to three metre wave of water would rush into the Wilson Road area if it failed.

Forecast rain is only expected to slightly increase the level of the Ovens and King rivers, but Mr O'Brien said more importantly it would not allow the streams to subside.

Ten residents continue to remain holed up in the area, but the SES has said it would prefer them to leave the zone.

The levee was yesterday found to have major structural damage, sparking renewed calls for residents to evacuate now.

Consultants appointed by Wangaratta Council determined there was a high risk the Wilson Road levee could break, sending water up to three metres high rushing at nearby homes.

Residents were told about the consultants’ findings at a meeting in the city last night.

Mr O’Brien said repairs to the levee were critical.

“At some point it will give way unless works are done to fix it,” he said.

Don't forget that if you lived in Pakistan you would have got $50,000,000 from the Australian government for nicks, but you are means tested and must meet stringent guidelines or you get nothing at all.

Is that $50,000,000 tax deductable and can we have it in small untraceable notes? With that kinda cash being thrown away, I might start my own church and get my tax exemption, then I will start a charity. With that tax free money I will buy property, shop fronts, cars and assests like every other 'reverend' and hire volunteers to work for free. I will ask for donations that will never see the recipient but I will give them long life milk, home brand coffee and home brand weet-bix 'to get them through'. If you're gonna give, cut out the middle man because those bags of clothes and blankets will be sorted through, some will go home with the staff and the rest will go on the shelf for near brand new price, take a day off work and go straight to the ones in need with a box of blankets and some warm clothes, have a cup of hot tea with them and invite them into your heart because not everyone has insurance. Your reward will be their gratitude.
