Port Pirie’s Meals on Wheels volunteers had a couple of special helpers recently when they did their rounds.
It was National Meals on Wheels Day and the theme was “Fast and Friendly” so Metropolitan Fire Service retained fireman Steve Magor and Netballer of the Year Brooke George gave up some of their day to help celebrate.
As a child, Brooke did Meals on Wheels with her grandparents, Glenys and Ivan George, and remembers the elderly people being happy to see her.
“They would try to give me lollies and biscuits. It was a good way to spend the morning,” she said.
Brooke and volunteer Edna Zanker delivered a hearty meal of corned beef and vegetables, vegetable soup and dessert to June Saler.
Mrs Saler was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels before she started receiving meals.
“I think the service is excellent and the people do a wonderful job,” she said.
“Sometimes if they didn’t come in, you wouldn’t see anyone so it is lovely to have happy bright
people coming in regularly to see me,” she said.
Meals on Wheels volunteers play a vital role in safeguarding their clients well-being.
If they notice a client is unwell, they are able to notify their service co-ordinator or seek emergency help.
Each year more than 750 Meals on Wheels
services across Australia deliver 15 million meals.
An average of 50,000 clients daily receive a meal, helping them to remain independently in their own home.
