A HAIL storm hit the Border yesterday afternoon as forecasters paint a gloomy picture for the week ahead.

Hail stones pummelled isolated parts of the region around 3pm in a brief but heavy downpour that caused minor flash flooding.

Our photographers took some beautiful photos - click on this picture to see them all.

A lightning strike started a fire at Mudgegonga, at Mount Jack yesterday.

Wind pushed the grass fire north over rocky country.

It was controlled within about an hour but the CFA is warning residents to remain vigilant for other spotfires caused by lightning in the days ahead.

The Bureau of Meteorolgy is forecasting rain for most of the weekend, including a potential thunderstorm for Saturday night's NRL clash at Lavington Oval.

The wet weather is expected to continue until Tuesday and temperatures will remain mild for most of next week.
