A HAIL storm hit the Border this afternoon as forecasters paint a gloomy picture for the week ahead.

Hail stones pummelled isolated parts of the region around 3pm in a brief but heavy downpour that caused minor flash flooding.

A lightning strike started a fire at Mudgegonga, at Mount Jack.

Wind pushed the grass fire north over rocky country.

It has been controlled but the CFA is warning residents to remain vigilant for other spotfires caused by lightning.

A severe thunderstorm warning is still current for the Border and North East as the most intense part of the latest rain band moves south-east towards Corryong.

There is another rain system further south over Bright.

The Bureau of Meteorolgy is forecasting rain for most of the weekend, including a potential thunderstorm for tomorrow night's NRL clash at Lavington Oval.

The wet weather is expected to continue until Tuesday and temperatures will remain mild for most of next week.
