Talkback outcry

12 Jun, 2009 11:31 AM
RADIO 2AY listeners have hit back at claims by the station’s management they want more music programs and less talkback.

There were dozens of responses on The Border Mail website yesterday to a story about the station’s decision to dump Melbourne-based host Derryn Hinch in the weekday drive-time slot.

Respondents were overwhelmingly in favour of retaining talkback programs and particularly those with local content.

Many people rejected the predominantly music format, defended by Ace Radio managing director, Stephen Everett, on Wednesday, arguing there were plenty of other options available in Albury-Wodonga if they wanted to listen only to music.

They were cynical about the reasoning behind the change, with many viewing it as a cost-cutting exercise on the part of station management.

Some listeners said they now made a switch from 2AY to other radio stations after midday, following the Steve Block and Neil Mitchell programs.

Others had chosen to switch off the station altogether and some are now listening to talkback programs from Melbourne station 3AW via the internet.

While not everyone claimed they were a fan of Derryn Hinch, there were many disappointed that another talkback program hosted daily between 8pm and midnight by Stuart Bocking had also been replaced.

Several respondents wanted to know why the locally based program hosted by former 2AY talkback announcer Richard Perno had been axed in January.

Mr Perno is now hosting a similar program on Dubbo station 2DU between 10am and 2pm.

Yesterday, he was surprised at news that Derryn Hinch’s program, which had been relayed from 3AW, had been axed.

“I never thought they’d do that,” Mr Perno said.

“I think it’s very sad considering what we had while we were on air there.

“We had the finger on the pulse of what was going on and were the mediator of thoughts held by the general public.”

Mr Perno said radio stations could hardly claim to be local if they were generating fewer locally based programs.

He said he missed the region and his radio colleagues from 2AY.

“I’m a little sad it’s gone pear-shaped. There were a lot of good people there,” he said.

I would like to voice my disappointment at the station for cancelling the two programs re the article in The Border Mail today. I am an avid radio listener, and may I say an advertiser on the station as well. When we started our advertising program it was sold as "Talk Back Radio", that was two months ago, and that is what I wanted to sell my advertising on, and obviously what I want to listen too. If they have done there research then and by your article they would have, should they have told us that the programming would be changing? If they had told me of the changes I for one would not have started the advertising, and I have now switched to the ABC.

Disappointing to hear about the axing of these 2 talk back programmes. If I wanted to listen to music I would tune into 105.7, which I may now have to! At least the music on 105.7 is modern!

I listen to Darren Hinch regularly go to http://www.mytalk.com.au click on "listen live" 4 PM, sit back and relax, you will need a computer and speakers. Digital radio will be arriving soon, so this has the potential to reshape radio as we currently know it.

This is on behalf of my Mum and the majority of older listeners who don't have access to internet. The majority of listeners to 2AY did so because of the talk back - be it Steve Block, Derryn Hinch or Stewart Bocking. Taking Richard Perno off in the afternoon was a huge mistake - he had a great local content and helped many locals find solutions to problems - the voice of the community. There are a number of stations to choose from if you want music - a lot of people will change to those stations or now watch TV instead. Your loss 2AY. PS: How long will Steve Block's job be safe? Bring back Perno!

I like to listen to Hinch on talkback. If I want to listen to music I will turn to FM. Unless you put him back on I will turn to another station.

I was first disappointed with 2AY, a few years ago when they discontinued broadcasting 2UE's highly entertaining, Stan Zimarnik, and started broadcasting 3AW's Bruce & Phil. What a boring show! When I faxed 2AY to complain, they said that I could listen to 2UE on the internet, so were not worried then, about losing listeners. At this stage, John Laws was still being broadcast on 2AY. There was an improvement when Richard Purno came along during the afternoon and 2UE's Stuart Bocking after 8pm. Derryn Hinch had a good afternoon show, even though it is mainly Victorian orientated but still covers a big range of human interest topics. From 5.30am, it is the same boring format on 2AY, the 'QOTT' ?, same old music over and over and I do not know why they cannot find some different music, ie. Beatles, AC DC, Mick Jagger, Atlantics, JOK, ... there's heaps of good old ones as well as the latest music that they do not play. In any case, 2AY does not need any more time spent on music. I have thought for a long time that they are probably missing out on a lot of local advertising because of how weak a program 2AY presents. I no longer work long hours in the evening, so at least I don't have to listen to whatever rubbish they put on. 2AY is the oldest radio station on the border and should be the best but unfortunately they are not, .. most of the other radio stations offer a lot more entertainment, .. from our local FM station, 2REM to the ABC, etc. I think the problem is because 2AY is not locally owned and controlled. regards, ravi

I want more news and talk back. I now listen to ABC after 12.00 noon. If you want to listen to head banging music you can tune to the FM Stations

i think that if 2ay wants to play misic instead of having good talk back like Hinch then they should go to fm. When i called and asked them about it all they said was listen to 3aw on the internet. Bit hard when you are at work. I only lsiten to Saturday moring garden show now.
