Talkback outcry

12 Jun, 2009 11:31 AM
RADIO 2AY listeners have hit back at claims by the station’s management they want more music programs and less talkback.

There were dozens of responses on The Border Mail website yesterday to a story about the station’s decision to dump Melbourne-based host Derryn Hinch in the weekday drive-time slot.

Respondents were overwhelmingly in favour of retaining talkback programs and particularly those with local content.

Many people rejected the predominantly music format, defended by Ace Radio managing director, Stephen Everett, on Wednesday, arguing there were plenty of other options available in Albury-Wodonga if they wanted to listen only to music.

They were cynical about the reasoning behind the change, with many viewing it as a cost-cutting exercise on the part of station management.

Some listeners said they now made a switch from 2AY to other radio stations after midday, following the Steve Block and Neil Mitchell programs.

Others had chosen to switch off the station altogether and some are now listening to talkback programs from Melbourne station 3AW via the internet.

While not everyone claimed they were a fan of Derryn Hinch, there were many disappointed that another talkback program hosted daily between 8pm and midnight by Stuart Bocking had also been replaced.

Several respondents wanted to know why the locally based program hosted by former 2AY talkback announcer Richard Perno had been axed in January.

Mr Perno is now hosting a similar program on Dubbo station 2DU between 10am and 2pm.

Yesterday, he was surprised at news that Derryn Hinch’s program, which had been relayed from 3AW, had been axed.

“I never thought they’d do that,” Mr Perno said.

“I think it’s very sad considering what we had while we were on air there.

“We had the finger on the pulse of what was going on and were the mediator of thoughts held by the general public.”

Mr Perno said radio stations could hardly claim to be local if they were generating fewer locally based programs.

He said he missed the region and his radio colleagues from 2AY.

“I’m a little sad it’s gone pear-shaped. There were a lot of good people there,” he said.

Well after reading these comments, I will not be looking at 2AY to advertise my local business. This is a very poor decision by 2AY that could hurt them.

ACE radio tends to be a big mix of automation or networking these days in all of their stations. Emily Canning would not be "live" for 6 hours either and most likely pre-recorded for the last couple of hours.

Having spent near 25 years in radio, this 'claim' by station management that listeners 'wanted' more music comes as no surprise. It's a throw away line used every ratings survey or format change. Truth is, music is a lot cheaper than paying for a networked talk program. Music can be automated at any time of the day, in fact it already is on countless stations across Australia - and not just overnight, either! Music royalties are a pittance and staff can pre record voice links for a music shift in a matter of minutes!

As a former announcer at 2AY I can say that I am sad to hear of the change of format, especially since we all put in the hard yards at the station to achieve the impossible. Unfortunatly this is typical of the low cost operation that Ace Radio runs. Ray Kington Hope 1032 Sydney

The head honchos at ACE radio are not idiots - they would have researched this decision before they made the changes. The people who are 'venting' about the format change are obviously a minority.

I have been an avid 2AY lsitener until you got rid of the talk back programs. Now I listen to the Castlereagh Line and then swap stations to the ABC. This was obviously a cost cutting measure by the management but they have lost many, many listeners. Did you ask the listening public before you made these decions? I was an all day listener and prospective advertiser but no more! Sad to go because Steve Block was great. But you didn't ask the public what they wanted! Big mistake!!!

NOT HAPPY, I would like to see talkback BACK ON 2AY please, I listen to it all the time when I am in bed and all I hear now is music that I keep on hearing over and over again. I am only 14 years of age but can you please put back on Stuart Bocking he is the best. All I listen to now is nothing because of the ACE RADIO NETWORK. AM is ment to be a talkback program FM is where you hear all the music. And radio sttions are only really making money out of ads/advertising by companys. If people don't listen then the companys will cancel thier ads and the the radio will be loosing a lot of money because hardly nowbody is hearing it. If I was the chairman of the ace radio netwok I would put talkback back on before the radio goes bust and guess what? That may happen people.

How about 2AY get with the times and produce their own "locally grown" radio show!. A local talk back program discussing local news, upcomming events, road conditions, weather etc would be a fantastic asset to the listening audience. I think the best option for 2AY would be to have the 4pm-6pm as a "Talk and more" program. By that I mean that if the majority of listeners want a talk back show then they will ring up on air and talk. If the listeners dont want to ring up then the host (PERNO?) would spin those old vinyl records..... Hmmmm.... cant get fairer than that.
