Talkback outcry

12 Jun, 2009 11:31 AM
RADIO 2AY listeners have hit back at claims by the station’s management they want more music programs and less talkback.

There were dozens of responses on The Border Mail website yesterday to a story about the station’s decision to dump Melbourne-based host Derryn Hinch in the weekday drive-time slot.

Respondents were overwhelmingly in favour of retaining talkback programs and particularly those with local content.

Many people rejected the predominantly music format, defended by Ace Radio managing director, Stephen Everett, on Wednesday, arguing there were plenty of other options available in Albury-Wodonga if they wanted to listen only to music.

They were cynical about the reasoning behind the change, with many viewing it as a cost-cutting exercise on the part of station management.

Some listeners said they now made a switch from 2AY to other radio stations after midday, following the Steve Block and Neil Mitchell programs.

Others had chosen to switch off the station altogether and some are now listening to talkback programs from Melbourne station 3AW via the internet.

While not everyone claimed they were a fan of Derryn Hinch, there were many disappointed that another talkback program hosted daily between 8pm and midnight by Stuart Bocking had also been replaced.

Several respondents wanted to know why the locally based program hosted by former 2AY talkback announcer Richard Perno had been axed in January.

Mr Perno is now hosting a similar program on Dubbo station 2DU between 10am and 2pm.

Yesterday, he was surprised at news that Derryn Hinch’s program, which had been relayed from 3AW, had been axed.

“I never thought they’d do that,” Mr Perno said.

“I think it’s very sad considering what we had while we were on air there.

“We had the finger on the pulse of what was going on and were the mediator of thoughts held by the general public.”

Mr Perno said radio stations could hardly claim to be local if they were generating fewer locally based programs.

He said he missed the region and his radio colleagues from 2AY.

“I’m a little sad it’s gone pear-shaped. There were a lot of good people there,” he said.

What a joke 2AY has become under the ACE ownership. If we cat our minds back to when they first purchased the station they made all these claims about growing the station well that is just not true. i think the trouble started about a year or so ago when they got rid of some key people and shows. Wayne Lansdown was great to listen to on saturdays with his local knowledge and contacts it was a real must listen to at our house and i also used to listen to the sport chat he did with Tony Lenard and then a little while later Perno went and now all that is local is 3 hours. The other day i called the staion to ask for Emily canning and was told she does the show from Horsham so the quotes from Mr everett were just lies. Where is the local manager Frank Davidsonin all this?

2AY management have made a serious error of judgement in their presumption that listeners do not want to listen to talk back radio after 12 noon. Yes, the music they are playing is pleasing to the ear however not for hour after hour after hour. For reasons again only known to the management Richard Perno was dropped and now once again they are showing their disdain for listeners. Richard was excellent with his variety of local knowledge and at all times seemed well informed. Maybe Derryn Hinch is not the person we actually want to hear however , Denis Walter from 12-3pm on 3AW is informative and not too judgemental and I'm sure their are a number of other presenters available through other networks who 2AY could utilise.

My favourite programs on local radio were Bruce & Phil, Derryn Hinch, Perno & Steve Bocling - all on 2AY and all now axed by 2AY. That's why I no longer bother to listen to 2AY.

I WAS a regular listener to 1494. Mainly becuase dad switched the radio off, or over to it when i listened to Matt and LC. But i became to enjoy it. I enjoyed the humor, the atmosphere and the tone in which Steve Blocks shows were presented. The QOT was a personal favourite, and i won many prizes. Fantastic local produce, Bandits tickets and chocolate one one occasion. However, lately the show has changed, to the point where dad doesnt even try to stop me if i change the radio. The quality of your show is not up to scratch Steve. you know what your listeners want.

I am sure 2AY advertisers are happy to know that 2AY staff are pushing their (former?) listeners to the 3AW or 2UE websites to listen to the programs they want. Maybe they too should send their promotional budget elsewhere. Chances are it will be wasted on 2AY. 2AY management take note. When advertisers realize your audience has halved, they will start to question why they are spending money with you. You had a unique position in the market place, and you chose to blow it away for the sake of saving a few dollars. Is it any wonder local radio is near dead?

How about 2AY get with the times and produce their own "locally grown" radio show!. A local talk back program discussing local news, upcomming events, road conditions, weather etc would be a fantastic asset to the listening audience. I think the best option for 2AY would be to have the 4pm-6pm as a "Talk and more" program. By that I mean that if the majority of listeners want a talk back show then they will ring up on air and talk. If the listeners dont want to ring up then the host (PERNO?) would spin those old vinyl records..... Hmmmm.... cant get fairer than that.

2ay? What are you doing to us presuming we don't want talk back radio? I did not hear of any survey being conducted......another made up story????? We learn so much of what is happening around Australia on talk back radio. Bring it back: WE WANT IT !!!!!! 2 more unhappy listners who will be happy to turn the dial to another radio station

NOT HAPPY, I would like to see talkback BACK ON 2AY please, I listen to it all the time when I am in bed and all I hear now is music that I keep on hearing over and over again. I am only 14 years of age but can you please put back on Stuart Bocking he is the best. All I listen to now is nothing because of the ACE RADIO NETWORK. AM is ment to be a talkback program FM is where you hear all the music. And radio sttions are only really making money out of ads/advertising by companys. If people don't listen then the companys will cancel thier ads and the the radio will be loosing a lot of money because hardly nowbody is hearing it. If I was the chairman of the ace radio netwok I would put talkback back on before the radio goes bust and guess what? That may happen people.
