The Great Wall of Wodonga

02 Apr, 2009 09:40 AM
ALMOST 240 names ranging from the outright ridiculous to the religious have been put forward in a naming competition for the Wodonga High Street mural.

A shortlist of two will be put to councillors this month to anoint the new name for what has long been known as the Coles Wall.

Suggestions have included The Great Wall of Wodonga, the Wailing Wall, Reflections and Did U Bring a Bong Along Wall.

The High Street Reference Group debated the merits of each name to come up with the shortlist.

Chairwoman Cr Lisa Mahood admits there was some “vigorous” debate before settling on the final pair.

“The reference group was given all the names and the chance to go away and look at them and the explanations from those people who put them up,” she said.

“Because of the diversity of the group it was decided that each person would then put forward their two preferred options.

“It would be fair to say there was vigorous discussions around the table about what the group will put forward for the councillor’s decision at the next meeting.

“But this has been community driven, from the terrific number of entries to the people we have consulted to come up with our final choices.”

Some of the reasoning for the ideas were as colourful as the names themselves.

Lifegiver was offered by one person on the grounds that “water gives life to our area, while art gives life to the sole (sic)”.

Memory Lane was suggested because the wall holds great memories, while David’s Wall honours former High Street makeover man David Engwicht.

There was no explanation attached to Did U Bring a Bong Along Wall.

Cr Mahood expects as many as six recommendations on further development of Wodonga’s main street will be put to councillors this month, including a makeover of Sesame Lane and Stanley Street water fountains.

“There are so many projects that need to progress from concept stage,” she said.

“But the reference group is not here to make decisions, it is to provide recommendations.

“I would hope that this is just the start, that each month we will be advising, making recommendations to council, on what we think is the best way forward.

“When you think that the reference group has only met four times, the amount of work they have gone through is just amazing.”
