A point-blank kick by Norm Wombat caused an explosion of green-and-white cheers at Memorial Oval on Saturday.
His goal from dead in front put Port one point ahead of Central Augusta with a minute remaining in the Spencer Gulf League grand final.
With Central leading by five points, Wombat had marked a centimetre-perfect pass from full-forward Adam Wilson in the goal square, crashed to the ground, scrambled to his feet and kicked truly. It had been an incredible sight as Wombat raced down the centre of the field to meet the ball with perfect anticipation.
As the siren sounded with the Bulldogs in front of the inaccurate Bloods, the ground erupted into celebrations.
The party continued at the Port Foot-
ball and Community Sporting Club where club secretary Stephen Murphy said: “It is one of the greatest days in the history of the club.”
