HENTY is rallying behind a cash-strapped couple hoping to rebuild their storm-damaged home.
Greg and Pat Forrest were hit by a freak storm last month that left their house and hobby farm in ruins.
The house was not insured, with the couple having little to no savings to carry out repairs.
But the community has rallied with various fundraising events, including a cake stall to be held at Henty on Friday.
Friends Flo Walsh and Chris White have organised the stall, with help from the Rotary club, and are also planning to hold a raffle with a meat tray and grocery hamper of donated goods.
“I just wish we could do more because they do really need bigger money than this to get them back into the house,” Mrs Walsh said.
“I’m hoping for at least $1000, but every little bit is going to help them.”
The Henty and District Cricket Club has opened an account at the Bendigo Bank for the couple, and also pledged $450 raised during a recent raffle.
Club president Adrian O’Brien said the family have been long-time members of the club and have been “doing it tough” after Mrs Forrest was diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer four years ago.
“From our point of view it’s not just a cricket club,” he said.
“It’s a community organisation and we help out members of the community as much as we can.”
Yesterday, Mr Forrest was overwhelmed by the community support which he said has included offers to stay in four houses, donations of furniture and people volunteering their time to help with the clean-up.
“It’s surprising the amount of people, even those that we didn’t know all that well, that have put their hands up to help,” he said.
“It’s just mind blowing really — it’s just been unbelievable.
“It makes you feel a bit better when you know people do care.”
The house just south of Henty lost half its roof in a storm on February 10.
Many of the couple’s belongings were destroyed, along with fences, sheds and hay.
