Wangaratta on alert as floodwaters creep higher

06 Sep, 2010 07:47 PM
FLOODWATERS at Wangaratta are expected to peak tonight.

The SES issued an evacuation notice to up to 60 homes in the city today, with fears the levee on Wilson Road may fail at any time.

A warning has also been issued for residents living near One Mile Creek north of the railway line.

SES incident controller Keith O’Brien said water levels were expected to swell another few centimetres overnight and peak around 12.8 metres, which was about the same level of the 1998 floods.

Speaking at a press conference in Wangaratta today, Mr O’Brien urged residents to keep informed about the floods in their area.

“Because the flooding is statewide at this point, the issue is we can’t guarantee getting out a message to every individual person so it is really important that the local communities, the individuals keep aware of what’s going on in their community, keep informed and follow the advice that’s provided in our information bulletins and other media releases,” he said.
