What's left for kids, asks mum

A PORT Macquarie mother fears a lack of supervised children’s activities could spell trouble for youngsters.

Mother-of-three Karen Graham, 35, has called for more supervised activities for the town’s young people in the wake of Switch Sk8park’s uncertain future and the PCYC’s closure.

Her son Jesse, 12, and his mates regularly use Switch Sk8park at the corner of the Oxley Highway and Sherwood Rd.

The park is facing closure if it can’t find a new home.

“I’d prefer them to go out there (Switch Sk8park) than to ride on the roads,” Mrs Graham said.

“I’m concerned about their safety riding around the streets.”

Mrs Graham said there just wasn’t any supervised options which would result in the kids “street scootering” or free roaming the streets on their scooters.

“When they are out roaming there is a lack of supervision which to me would probably mean trouble,” she said.

Although Jesse didn’t use the PCYC, Mrs Graham is worried about the impact if the community loses both the PCYC and Switch Sk8park.

Independent candidate for Port Macquarie Jamie Harrison has vowed, if elected, to register a charity to raise funds for a youth shed including a PCYC and other youth facilities.

He would seek a land donation in a central location, lobby the state and federal government for support and apply for Port Macquarie-Hastings Council funding through the Community Grants Program.

“I believe the youth of Port Macquarie are missing out and there is less opportunities for them now to occupy themselves in a safe supervised manner than I had here when I was a kid,” Mr Harrison said.
