Wind brings cold, cloud but little rain

YESTERDAY’S sweeping squalls brought little rain but sent the mercury plummeting into single figures.

In Albury the temperature fell six degrees in an hour after midday as the wind turned to the south west.

The change was just as pronounced at Rutherglen with a low of seven degrees at 3pm, just half the top temperature of earlier in the day.

The mountains also returned to winter-like weather with the mercury falling well below zero at Mount Hotham and Falls Creek by early afternoon.

The biggest rainfall total for the day was at Yarrawonga and Wangaratta with 3.2mm.

Albury airport’s weather station recorded just 1mm.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Peter Newham said it was standard spring weather.

“It was a strong cold front and the drop in temperatures was fairly common for this time of year with warm air masses and cold fronts clashing,” he said.

“And as the wind drops away tonight you can expect frost patches tomorrow.

“For the rest of the week you are looking at fog in the morning and temperatures creeping up to the low 20s by the weekend. The next rain is early next week, perhaps Monday or Tuesday.”

Lake Hume was yesterday 35 per cent full. At the same time last year it was at less than 29 per cent capacity.
