A POREPUNKAH woman was airlifted to Melbourne this morning after hitting a wombat on her pushbike.
Police said the woman, 51, was riding along the Buckland Valley Road, about 8km from Porepunkah, when her bike can into contact with the animal at 5.45am.
It caused her to go over the handle bars and injure her head, chest and shoulder.
Leading Sen-Constable Mitch Hawley said the woman was riding with her partner at the time of the accident and didn’t see the wombat because it was still dark.
It is believed she was travelling about 30kmh.
Rural Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the woman thought she lost consciousness and was flown to Melbourne as a precaution.
The helicopter transported her from the Porepunkah airfield to The Alfred hospital at 9.10am.
