MORE than half the workers at Lavington gearbox factory DSI lost their jobs yesterday afternoon.
Employees were called to a meeting at 3.15pm and told Korean car company SsangYong owed the DSI a substantial amount of money and until that was forthcoming there was no work for them.
About 170 casual and temporary staff have been axed.
They were told they may get their jobs back in anything from a day to five weeks, depending on SsangYong's response.
Overall, 300 employees are based at the Kaitlers Road factory which has had a chequered history with regular job losses in recent years.
