Hockey finals action

18/09/2008 10:43:00 AM
Last Thursday afternoon our junior divisions played there finals to determine who was playing the winners of the Major Semi Finals in the grandfinal match on Saturday.

On Thursday afternoon in our U11s division, Scone Smash Repairs took on Blooms Engineering. It was a hard fought match with both teams strong-minded to be in the grandfinal on Saturday. At one point the game looked like heading into extra time with the score locked at 1-all with 5 minutes to go. Blooms Engineering came away winners scoring in the last 2 minutes. All players should be proud of their efforts as they all played tirelessly determined to be the opposition against Think Pink on Saturday.

Following the U11s game on Thursday, our 15s then took to the field to also play their final. Both Titans and Scone Florist & Giftware were eager for that grandfinal spot against Ferrari’s on Saturday. The game was hard fought by all players with plenty of will power, skill and team work shown by all. Scone Florist & Giftware looked like being the opposing team for the grandfinal on Saturday being 1 nil up with 1 minute to go but the Titans were not to have a bar of it and scored in the last 30 seconds from a penalty corner therefore seeing the match head into extra time.

Due to darkness the game was suspended and resumed at 8:30am on Saturday morning for the extra time. Teams were still locked at 1-all at the end of extra time and then went onto running penalty strokes. Titans came away winners 2-1 and then moved onto to play Ferrari’s at 12noon in the grandfinal match. Once again, both Titans and Scone Florist & Giftware should be proud of their efforts.

On Saturday, the weather could not have been more perfect for a great day of hockey. Grandfinals were played in the junior divisions and finals played in the senior divisions. Plenty of parents, players and spectators came in and out throughout the day to watch and cheer on many games played. At one stage there seemed to be more adrenaline on the side line then on the field especially during the junior matches.

In our U11s grandfinal, Think Pink took on Blooms Engineering. All the players used all their energy, skill and team play to be the winners. This was proved as there was no score until 10 minutes into the second half with Blooms Engineering putting a goal away. Blooms looked as though they had the icing on the cake until Think Pink scored in the last 40 seconds tying the score at 1-all. Extra time of 10 minutes each way sudden death got underway and with only 3 minutes to go, it looked as though it was coming down to penalty strokes but Blooms Engineering won the game with a deflection into the goal box from a hit into the circle from a fellow team mate. Congratulations on a game well played by both teams. Lauren Beatty of Blooms Engineering was awarded the umpires player of the match.

In our U15s game, Ferrari’s took on the mighty Titans. The weather was warming quite quickly by 12 noon but this did not deter either team. Both teams played hard, used all the skill they knew and worked together as teams to be the 2008 grandfinal winners. At half time, Ferrari’s were up 2-1 but did not ease up on the game skills in the second half and this was proven as they came away winners 4-2 but could not thank the Titans enough for a game well played as it was not an easy game. John Langley of Ferrari’s was awarded the umpires player of the match.

Presentation night was held on Saturday evening with around 250 people in attendance. Our special guests for the night were Hockey NSW CEO Mr. Paul Bruce, Director of Hockey NSW and Delegate of Hunter Power Conference Mrs. Janet Gould and Hockey NSW Umpire Conveor Mr. Geoff Hope. It was a pleasure to have the company of these guests who presented some of the awards handed out to many.

Mr. Geoff Hope also took the opportunity to attend our games on Saturday. Whilst there he tested to senior umpires for their State ‘C’ Badge.

It was a great night with many awards being presented. Thank you to all that assisted on Friday and Saturday with the set up.
