THE Wodonga Wolves and Lady Wolves are each one win from reaching consecutive CBL North East conference grand finals tonight at the Wodonga Leisure Centre.
The Lady Wolves will kick off proceedings for tonight’s tasty double header where they’ll endeavour to remain unbeaten and defeat the Maryborough Lady Blazers for the third time this year.
Lady Wolves coach Mark De Koeyer admitted his team would be hard to beat if it played its best basketball, although he conceded a number of niggling injuries to key players would keep the game tight.
“It’s going to be a much harder game than people think,” De Koeyer said.
“The Lady Blazers pushed us last time we played them and tonight will be a different kettle of fish again.
“Caitlyn Mlejnek is out and Rachel Jeffery and Tenille Collins will suit up but are no guarantee to play due to a thigh and shoulder injury.”
After citing defence as the Lady Wolves’ Achilles heel mid-season, De Koeyer said it would be a prominent feature in tonight’s game plan.
“Our defence was lacking for a while there,” he said.
“We’ve definitely been focusing on that part of our game recently, that and our shooting.
“We’ve got the advantage of a home court and home crowd so hopefully all our supporters come and make some noise.”
The Wolves will be using Beau Sheridan as inspiration when they take to the court against Wangaratta after the Lady Wolves.
Sheridan will retire after a career spanning nearly 200 games.
Coach Mick Merrilees said it would be sad to see Sheridan go.
“He’s been such a great player for this league,” Merrilees said.
“He’s one of the most experienced guys still playing and he’s been such a great ambassador for the Wolves over that time.”
Merrilees said his team was set on, not only defeating the Warriors tonight, but making it to the CBL state grand final to avenge last year’s loss.
The Lady Wolves semi final tips off at 6pm with the men at 8pm.
