Jamboree ‘a huge winner’

20 Nov, 2009 12:27 AM
“FUN and enjoyment” rather than “winning at all costs” will be theme of the Great Murray River National Basketball Jamboree over the next four days.

And more than 200 youngsters are expected to do just that.

Players from country NSW, Victoria, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory will hit the courts at the Albury Sports Stadium later today along with a growing New Zealand contingent.

The jamboree started in 2001 and has since injected hundreds of thousands of dollars into the Border economy.

Event co-ordinator Paul Gooding said yesterday the jamboree had been a huge winner.

“The concept was developed in Europe a number of years ago and involves under 12 boys and girls from all over Europe coming together for a week-long camp,” Gooding said.

“They play basketball, but are involved in a total range of social activities, including other sports.

“For many years now, both Basketball NSW and Basketball Victoria have been successfully conducting state jamborees.

“The emphasis of the jamboree will be firmly placed on both fun and the development of social, fundamental and playing skills.

“Players will enjoy skills, training, playing and taking part in various social and educational activities.

“Scores will be kept during each match, but no results will be compiled and no trophies of any description are awarded as we consider all children as winners.”

Youngsters will be taken to tourist attractions around the Border including the Albury Swim Centre and all players and officials will be housed at Lake Hume Resort.

Matches start today at 2.55pm with the opening ceremony scheduled for 4.20pm.

The closing ceremony will be held at noon on Tuesday.
