THE Albury-Wodonga Lady Bandits suffered an agonising 67-65 defeat to the Dandenong Rangers at the Albury Sports Stadium on Saturday night, throwing their play-off hopes into uncertainty.
Former Lady Bandits guard Amelia Todhunter nailed a clutch three-pointer with two seconds left to give the visitors a gritty win.
The Rangers were led by Chelsea Burns’ 20 points, while Todhunter hit four triples in her 15 points and Tess Meyer added 12.
For the Bandits Alex Duck top-scored with 19 points while Toni Edmondson and Lisa Wallbutton added 13 and 12 respectively.
The Rangers raced to a 16-9 lead before their hosts worked their way back to trail 20-17.
With Dandenong employing a zone defence, the visitors dared the Border club to beat them from the outside and when Wallbutton went to the bench with three fouls it was apparent the Lady Bandits would need their role players to step up for the rest of the half.
And the Border outfit showed plenty of the grit and hustle that has let them punch above their weight all season to finish the first half with a 31-30 lead.
Dandenong opened the second half in a determined mood and ripped off an 8-2 run that had an openly fuming Kereama calling time-out.
But it had little effect, with Todhunter nailing a triple to extend the lead to eight.
Yet again the hosts displayed plenty of intestinal fortitude and with one quarter to play, had narrowed the gap to five points, 51-46.
The visitors pushed their lead out to open the final period with two quick baskets but a crucial three-point bomb from Wallbutton and then an open court lay-up from Edmondson allowed the Lady Bandits to take a 59-57 lead.
Todhunter showed the Rangers’ own fighting qualities with another three-pointer to reclaim the lead before Edmondson scored to take the advantage back again.
Emma Mahady appeared to have handed the Lady Bandits the win when she was fouled while making a lay-up with 19 seconds left.
But the young forward couldn’t complete it and despite Wallbutton grabbing the offensive rebound, the Rangers stole the ball to set the stage for Todhunter’s heroics.
